Franz Xaver Messerschmidt (1736-1783) was a German-Austrian artist.
In 1774 he was expelled from the the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts because of his illness.
He had Crohn’s Disease.
In 1781 he stated that he created the sculptures using his own face as template as he was suffering strong pains.
